Overview

The subject is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the need for succession planning and to learn how to justify, develop and maintain a succession planning and management system. This subject complements Strategic Human Resource Development in that it focuses on the succession system (its justification, development and maintenance) while Strategic Human Resource Development focuses more on the processes involved in a strategic approach to human resource development.

*       Trends influencing succession planning and management

*       Moving to a state-of-the-art approach

*       Competency identification and values clarification

*       Making the case for a succession planning and management system

*       Starting a systematic program

*       Refining the succession planning and management program

*       Assessing present work requirements and individual job performance

*       Assessing future work requirements and individual potential

*       Developing internal “successors”

*       Using alternatives to internal development

*       Using technology to support succession planning and management programs

*       Evaluating succession planning and management programs
